Stump Grinding and Stump Removal in Essex, Hertfordshire and London

A stump left in the ground is a trip hazard, gets in the way of mowing and building, and can attract fungus. We grind it out below ground level so the space is usable again.

How it works

A stump grinder is a machine with a toothed cutting wheel that chips the stump away a little at a time, down below the surface and through the main roots around it. It is far quicker and less disruptive than digging a stump out, and leaves the ground level.

After the tree has gone

We grind stumps after our own removals, and for stumps left by somebody else. If a tree has been down for years and the stump is still there, it can almost always be ground out.

What you are left with

The hole is filled with the grindings, or the grindings are taken away and the hole backfilled with soil, ready for turf, planting or a patio. Tell us what is going there next and we will leave it accordingly.

Common questions about stump grinding & removal

How deep do you grind a stump?

Below ground level, deep enough for turf or planting to go over the top. If something more substantial is going there, like a patio or a shed base, tell us and we will go deeper.

Can you get a grinder into a back garden?

Usually, yes. Grinders come in sizes that fit through a standard side gate. If access is very tight, tell us when you call and we will look at it on the visit.

Will the stump grow back?

Some trees try to send up new shoots from roots left in the ground. Grinding takes out the stump and the main roots, which stops nearly all of it; any odd shoot after that can simply be cut off.
